So, work on the new Piece is going really well, roughs are complete and final painting starts this week before construction next. Expect some sneaky (blurry phone) pics very soon.

This new piece is a nice breathe of fresh air for me, being alot more hand-on with constructing something opens up a lot of potential for other pieces in the series, its very different from stretching the canvas you paint on so more 3D is something I'm likely to pursue depending on how the piece goes down. I'd like to up-scale the work too which is always exciting. Larger paintings are what I'm really about.

Boring Part:

Its important to break down your process as much as possible I find, it gets you out of ruts where you constantly feel as though you need to abide by a set of rules or adhere to certain aesthetics in your 'style' (*cringe*). The point at which you think you have a style is when you seriously need to think about long-term creative plans as you've essentially given your work and process a sell-by date. Although this is usually the case in commercial art and not finer art.

I don't usually preach, but its just something that has struck me lately about a lot of work I've been looking at.

New work: Phase one

Spent most of the weekend cutting and sanding down hardboard, not my favourite surface to paint on but it suits this particular project best.

The aim of the new work is a return to portraiture, slightly less dark in tone but still staying with regular themes; jigsawed faces, exploration of facial features in context to a persons character.

So here's a sample pic of the surface which I'm going to be painting on - Abstract so far but its just a section so all will come together in the show. Also, you'll have to excuse the bad quality photo, its a crappy phone shot.

First up is a friend of mine - Stuart Kolakovic

We spent alot of time hanging out together during our studies, Stuart has had a phenomenal career to date with a client list that isn't too shabby..

His most recent body of work is going on show at Nobrow Gallery and notes a change in direction for Stu as he's for once (well, for the 1st time in a while) been allowed free reign on the show; So naturally I'm expecting a full on Willy-Wonker-of-Death experience. As you can see, theres a welcomed darkness to the flyer thats been missing from his commercial work for some time now, its got me fully hyped. expect all sorts, but DO NOT expect to leave the show dissapointed.

So, it's been a busy one for the past few months; luckily with private commissions as opposed to commercial (which sometimes means time consuming and a tad laborious) but the good news is I'm now working on new public stuff. The first of which will be seen at the Stolenspace Summer Group show.

The new work sees a return to more traditional portraiture, so a return to flesh colours and human faces is in order however be expecting something a little different from me in the presentation arena; multi-layered if you will.

As for the content of this blog, I'll have a bigger presence on it from now on; expect blog posts with some new, and some older artists and their work. I'm Vowing now to keep it a little more up to date so I look like a loser if I fall behind again.

So lets get this show back on the road shall we..

1st casualty of 2011, my twitter account - for some reason it just didn't do it for me!

I was using the account to raise awareness of upcoming shows and current workings,I always have work on but there was something that really didn't agree with me about having to constantly update the thing to say so! - also, due to the nature of the thing and the bulk of false followers I was getting and blocking etc it felt so temporary and fickle. I'm not knocking it at all though, its hella fun to read and kills time when I need to as well as keeping ya'll informed..Just not about me

So basically, I'm no longer on it.

As for 2011 in general, expect an update by the end of Jan on the year ahead, its shaping up to a busy start!

Howdy all,

Here's some info on the upcoming group show at StolenSpace which has one of the maddest lists of artists I've seen in some time. All the pieces, including mine, are mini (129mm x 98mm) and are aimed at re-thinking existing book covers in association with Penguin books.

I've Chosen to tackle Chuck Palaniuks 'Invisible Monsters' - a pretty gnarly books but I'm sure you'll agree it suits my ideal subject for a painting:

Hey general Public!

Thought I'd come on and show anybody reading this some love and give you the Arth lowdown!

1stly, My interview/feature in issue 3 of HEY! magazine has just gone into print and is set for international release on Sept 9th; it features lots of words from me and a few insights into my process and influences growing up so keep a keen eye out for that, i'm actually pretty excited about it myself!

Secondly, I've been working closely with DELS for his second single cover, 'Trumpalump'; I'm set to have it painted up by the beginning of next week so expect some sort of teaser crop very soon..DELS had specific ideas on what he wanted for the cover so for those who are familiar with my work it may seem reminiscent of a certain image from 'Itsa bitsa..' though being bespoke its a pleasure to paint again!

Thirdly, I'm working on my show entry for an upcoming Group show at StolenSpace.. though at this point the less said the better, however: its going to be abit special it is.

Keep an eye out on the StolenSpace Website for show announcements in the next few weeks.

I'd also like to take the opportunity (as I dont know when I'll be blogging next) to drop a big Heads-up for my boy Wordtomothers upcoming Oct show at StolenSpace too, its go'n be a BANGER.

Howdy all, especially all the new 'all' that are now reading this here blog.

Firstly, a big thanks to everyone that turned up for the opening of the show, busy times. Much fun was had and much chat was pelted out of my mouth..shout out to the always entertaining Fairhead brothers (shameless links HERE and HERE) my boy WTM (another shameless link) and everyone else who made it down. The show is still on until the 9th of May and its getting great feedback so hope you can pop down.

Being a bit of a Cinephile and appreciator of all that is bold text and considered imagery I figured I’d pass this little gem on.

The Movie Title Stills Collection is a site that compiles many opening credits and title shots from films through the decades and places them in a nicely laid out timeline for you to browse. It’s clear to see trends in design throughout the years when they are all placed in chronological order and next to each other. I’m sure everyone’s going to dig the 80's titles as much as I did…

Hope the site gets alot of updates though, there are quite a few I'd personaly like to see up there..

Howdy Folks, Just a quick update really.

StolenSpace 'Winter Warmers' show went down a storm, rammed night and many of my good friends came along to REPRESENT. If you didn't get a chance to see it my work can be found here or alternatively IN THE FLESH for about another week (until 20/12.09). The show had many highlights so it'd be a crime* to point some out individually.

New work is being produced for a two man show later in the year..I say later, I mean 'soon later'.. rather than 'later later'..so keep your eyes peeled.

also, I would like to leave you with this video I found the other day..kept me watching right to the end. its a tad on the 'Kelly watch the stars' side though.

Checked out the new Chloe Early work last night, needless to say it was pretty darn impressive. The piece I've posted above was for me the highlight, the sheer scale was enough to make your mouth drop..not just because it was Blimmin MASSIVE but it didn't shy away from the usual detail and mark making you'd expect.

oh, and here is a picture of me looking at it like a complete retard..

Stumbled across this on t'intnet, really enjoyed it. its as creepy as..but took me straight back to when I used to catch 'The Shooting Gallery' on late night channel four. Strong Short films, not necessarily saying much but still nicely crafted and bold in their efforts.

Peice of Beige

Some times you start an image and everything is going OK. then you carry on painting that image and its visually starts to melt. Then you attempt to finish the piece and its turns into a huge piece of beige...

Two Options;

Attend to it; turn the beige to more of a Cream..a white even..something workable.

or

Allow he Beige to turn into a steaming brown; accepting that it wasn't meant to be and accept that some parts of that brown may look OK...but PHOTOSHOP CANT WORK FLIPPIN MIRACLES NOW CAN IT!?!

Ah..., the frustration.

One of my favourite artists and general multi talent; Simon Henwood was nominated for Best Video at the recent VMA's for his direction on Kanye Wests 'Love Lockdown'. Seeing the nomination made me want to rush on a post some jive about how good he is, especially his ability to bold on all fronts..

like this marvelous B&W portrait for example...

His portraits are stunning in their simplicity and character, especially the flatter 'kido' and 'White Kitten' series..Plus the dudes back catalogue is worth a read as it'll make your face melt.

Somethings you come accross on tinternet sometimes step beyond weird.. for example...cakes with teeth.

Sharp teeth at that..

The work of Scott Hove has always been one of those things that instantly stand out for me and always carry a great deal of interest, whether its into his making process or just his ideas behind each peice..Sometimes though it doesnt really matter what the idea is when its so pleasing (often scary) to look at..

Highlight of his most recent show 'Cakeland' for me (well, from what I've seen online) is definately 'Gearface' though for me it carries some very subtle nods in composition to some work by AJ Fosik..Could just be the teeth though..

Im a fan of simple shocks and peices that mix an element of ambiguity with a striking presence

Three Frames

Just Came across this site, pretty nice stuff. Some are pointless but some are pretty intense. Its a process where three frames taken from movies (mainly 80's movies here) and are looped together to create a repetitive moving image. I've seen loads floating around on the netfor years now, mainly novelty ones and they are relatively easy to do but I was amazed to find a site that is just about them in relation to film.

The best ones for me are those which have a very limited motion and/or elements that are still, they've a trippy 3D edge, such as...

though no Doubt they dont work properly on blogs..

Also, caught a glimpse of Derren Browns Characatures on my net travels, pretty decent stuff as Derren Brown goes, made me see a differfent side of him (kinda knew it existed anyway, as he revealed one when he first appeared on TV) but none the less twas nice to see that he has a talent that doesnt lie within manipulating people.
